Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess will receive extra staterooms and a new Japanese restaurant as part of a $30 million makeover.

The ship entered drydock in Singapore’s Sembarang shipyard this week.

As part of the refurbishment she will be fitted with 14 new staterooms, which could increase her capacity to 2,698.

She will join Sun Princess as the only two ships in the fleet to offer passengers miso, shiro, nigiri and sashimi at the Kai Sushi restaurant. Her version will be larger seating 66-people compared to Sun Princess’ 47-guest venue.

The most dramatic change on board will be made to the 817 square-metre bath and garden complex. It will be fitted with indoor and outdoor areas and will feature classic Japanese bath experiences.

Inside the bath area will include an open-air Japanese hydrotherapy pool, an ocean view sauna and bath, a dry sauna and a stone bath with an Utaseyu cascade of hot water designed to help relieve tension in the back and shoulders.

Outdoors, the garden will have shaded lounge chairs and a footbath.

Meanwhile, over the in Horizon Court buffet area, the ship will be upgraded with contemporary food service areas, a la carte cooking stations, a pastry shop and refreshed décor.

The duty-free section of the ship will feature new shops including watch boutique, OMEGA; fragrance bar, Essence; crystal Swarovski and Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn collections can be found at the Meridian Bay; and Limelight will sell designer brands.

Other changes will be the addition of a sports court, a new art gallery display, new décor in Sabatini’s Italian restaurant and a remodeled casino.

Refurbishment is scheduled for completion by April 2, before the ship starts its second season of Japan-based cruises on April 17.

During her time in Asia, she will sail a range of nine day cruises from Tokyo. She is scheduled to visit Australia in November 2014 for her first circumnavigation from Sydney.
