Titan-Micoperi have announced their plans to recover the Costa Concordia wreck off the island of Giglio, with work slated to commence this week.

Expected to take approximately 12 months, the plan is to refloat the hull in one piece to minimise environmental impact and maximise safety.

Once the world-first removal is complete and the wreck towed to an Italian port, the sea bottom will be cleaned and marina flora replanted.

“From the early stages of the accident, Costa Crociere has fully committed its resources, professional expertise and organisation to minimising the impact of the shipwreck on the environment and on Isola del Giglio in particular,” Costa Crociere S.p.A president Gianni Onorato said.

“As was the case with the fuel-removal operation, we have always worked to find the best possible and safest solution to protect the island, its marine environment and its tourism industry.”
