Carnival launches sampler cruises to lure first-timers

Carnival Cruise Line will launch a new three-night weekend sampler voyage to lure first-time cruisers in its 2016-17 itinerary, said vice president Australia Jennifer Vandekreeke.

The cruise to nowhere will give those who are new to cruising a taste of what cruising is all about.

“The weekend getaways at sea are for those who want to try cruise and are not sure what to expect,’’ Ms Vandekreeke said.

Carnival’s two ships, Legend and Spirit have always attracted families and couples. Carnival now wants to attract those who are new to cruising.

Since Carnival Spirit has been homeported in Sydney for the last two-and-a-half years and Legend spends an extended time in Australia in the summer months, the two ships have played host to 320,000 passengers.

“Now they are coming back again as repeat passengers,’’ she said.

Prices for the three-day weekend cruise start from $649 per person twin-share for an interior room to $849 per person for cabins with balconies.

The line will launch a record 133 cruises for its 2016-17 program including a four-night Moreton Island getaway, a five-night cruise to Tasmania, a six-night Melbourne Cup cruise, a new 10-night voyage to New Zealand’s South Island and an 18-night cruise to Hawaii calling at Papeete and Bora-Bora in Polynesia.

Ms Vandekreeke said that passengers would be able to discover more ways to have fun at sea with Carnival Spirit undergoing a US$47 million dry dock refit at Singapore’s Sembawang Shipard in August.

When she returns to Sydney on September 14 she will have three new restaurants and five new bars.

“The big stuff has been done with the Aussification of the ships. Now its time to bring some of America’s key food like burritos, tacos, tortillas and salsa in BlueIguana Cantina. There’s also Guy’s burger joint with special sauces on board Carnival Spirit when she comes back from dry dock.

“Camp Ocean for kids will more immersive and marine focused. It will be relocated to deck 10 and will be bigger and more expansive.’’
