New Polar Expedition Vessel

One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) has announced that Akademik Sergey Vavilov will join Akademik Loffe as its second polar expedition vessel from November 2012.

Like Akademik Loffe, Akademik Sergey Vavilov was built in Finland in the late 1980s for the Russian Academy of Science. Built for the purpose of hydro-acoustic research, both vessels are extremely fast, quiet and stable and considered by many to be the finest expedition vessels for polar waters.

“This addition to our fleet was both necessary and timely for OOE,” said Andrew Prossin, founder of the company. “It is necessary because our 2011/12 season has almost completely sold out and we definitely need a second vessel. It is timely because the opportunity to take Vavilov now puts us in a leading position with the two best expedition vessels in the world.”

The 105-passenger vessel will be extensively refurbished before deployment, with redecorated cabins, modernised public areas and a wellness centre.
