They’re the first smile you see in the morning and they’re the ones working hard to ensure your cruise holiday is special.
Filipino staff make up the majority of ship crews across the globe – 12,800 work for Royal Caribbean alone. And this week it’s your turn to return the gratitude offering your support or even a quick hug to your Filipino crew member.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines has resulted in 4,460 deaths. Displaced 921,200 people. And destroyed 243,600 houses.
Stepping up during a time of need, cruise lines have offering humanitarian relief efforts and support for staff affected by the typhoon.
Among them include; Royal Caribbean; Carnival; Norwegian; Fred Olsen; Princess Cruises; Crystal Cruises; Costa Cruises; and the list goes on.
Royal Caribbean says its humanitarian efforts to the people of the Philippines will total $1 million. The line will team up with World Vision to provide broader assistance to storm victims and has announced it will offer matching contributions from employment dollar-for-dollar.

Royal Caribbean Cruises chairman Richard D Fain said the line is focused on assisting its Filipino staff and those affected.
He said: “Our heart go out to everyone affected by the storm.
“More than. We want to do everything we can to help, their families, and their neighbours heal from this terrible tragedy.”
P&O Cruises Australia has donated $50,000 to the Save the Children foundation to assist children and families. The line has asked social media followers to donate to the Typhoon Haiyan Children’s Relief Fund.

A Facebook post on the line’s page said: “Our hearts and prayers go out to all those impacted by the tragedy and we are already rolling out initiatives to support our crew with family living in the regions where Typhoon Haiyan has left its mark.
“We are working with the Philippines office to obtain information on any family members who may have been impacted by this storm and are providing details to them as they become available.”
Carnival Corporation and its 10 cruise brands have teamed up with Miami HEAT to donate at least $1 million to support relief efforts.
Carnival Corporation’s brands and its employees will also support relief efforts through local fundraising and other aid initiatives.
Norwegian Cruise Lines said it is assisting staff to make contact with family members back home and to make arrangements for those who need to return home to do so.
Princess Cruises has donated $110,000 to relief efforts including; $50,000 to International Medical Corps; $50,000 to the Red Cross; and another $10,000 to the Homer Foundation in the Philippines.
Costa Cruises has announced it will donate $100,000 to a crew fund to support affected Filipino staff.
