Holland America has announced it will call its new ship ms Koningdam, to reflect the company’s roots in the Netherlands.

‘Koning’ means king in Dutch and ‘dam’ has been used in every Holland America passenger vessel name since 1883.

The name also honors the first king of the Netherlands in over a century, His Majesty King WillemAlexander.

Debuting in February 2016, ms Koningdam will be the largest in the ship’s fleet carrying 2,650 passengers. That’s 543 passengers more than the line’s current largest vessel, ms Nieuw Amsterdam.

Extra capacity is designed to replace outgoing capacity, when 1,258-passenger ms Ryndam and ms Statendam depart the Holland America fleet to join P&O Cruises Australia.

She will be the first in the line’s new ship category called, the Pinnacle-class and will feature new public spaces and venues as well as familiar spaces and amenities currently popular across the Holland America fleet.

“This new Pinnacle Class ship will be our largest, most contemporary vessel, and it was only fitting to give it a name that embodies great achievement for the future, while embracing timeless tradition,” Holland America Group chief executive Stein Kruse said.

Construction of ms Koningdam commenced earlier this month at Italian shipyard, Fincantieri’s Marghera.
