Your holiday starts when you arrive in Brisbane where you can explore the capital city’s thriving café culture intertwined with its classic relaxed Gold Coast vibe. Take a stroll by the city’s river banks, pop into its glitzy shopping malls for a bit of retail therapy or simply head to Moreton Island, a quiet retreat of sandy dunes, bush and lagoons.

Spirit of Queensland rail journey from Brisbane to Cairns

After a leisurely morning the next day, you will board the Spirit of Queensland for your relaxing 1500 km rail journey to Cairns. You will enjoy the state-of-the-art facilities served to you with classic old-world charm as the passing window scenes change from the urban sights of Brisbane to the lush green landscapes of rural Queensland.

You will arrive in Cairns the next day, the tropical paradise with its balmy air and azure waters. Walk by the esplanade and stop by a harbour front restaurant to savour some of its Balinese-inspired cuisine.

With a whole day to explore Cairns, you might consider taking a trip to Cape Tribulation and the Atherton Tablelands, a favourite among nature lovers. You can also take a day trip to Green Island, a nearby national park.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

The following day, you will board the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway for your amazing journey through the Barron Gorge National Park where you will be mesmerised by the sight and roar of the Barron Falls. After a delicious lunch overlooking the lake you will board the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway to glide over the lush canopy of the rainforest and turquoise ocean for your journey back to Cairns.

No trip to Cairns is complete without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef. You will be taken by catamaran where morning refreshments are served as you sail to Moore Reef to learn more about the reef system. You will then be taken to a semi-submersible vessel and glass-bottom boat to see the beautiful corals. Enjoy lunch and afternoon tea with incredible views of the outer reef before you head back to Cairns.

On your last day in Cairns, take some time to learn about the history of the Yirrganydji and Yidinji people and discover some of their amazing indigenous artwork.
