Adding new competition in the river cruise market, Scenic Tours has announced it will launch a new less-expensive subsidiary, Emerald Waterways.
Based out of Europe, the new river cruise line will commence operations in April next year with two 182-passenger ships, the Emerald Sky and Emerald Star.
Although marketed as a less-expensive alternative to Scenic Tours, Emerald Waterways ships will still include a number of amenities to compete against popular river cruise lines Viking River Cruises and Avalon Waterways.
The subsidiary’s ships will be equipped with a heated swimming pool and a movie theatre, while 70 of the 92 cabins on board will be suites.
Initial itineraries will include an eight-day voyage from Nuremberg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary as well as a 12-day trip between Basel, Switzerland and Amsterdam.
