Former Cunard ship on fire

A former Cunard vessel, Ocean Countess [formerly, Cunard Countess] was seen ablaze over the weekend in Chalkis, Greece.

The 17,593grt ship belonged to Cunard from 1976 to 1996 until she was sold to Awani Cruises. She has sailed from owner to owner, but these days belongs to Majestic International Cruises.

According to reports, the ship has been laid up in Greece for some time, but was expected to return to cruise service in 2014.

Those plans appear to have since been hindered, with the fire appearing to have caused extensive damage.

Five workers were safely evacuated, according to Maritime Matters, although the cause of the fire is still unknown.
