At what point does a cruise ship become too big?

That is the question being debated after Royal Caribbean announced it had started construction on the world’s largest cruise ship this week.

The unnamed vessel will weigh 227,700 gross register tonnage (GRT). That’s 2,418 GRT larger than the world’s current largest ship and her Oasis-class sister-ship, Allure of the Seas.

Although full details of the ship are still under wraps, a spokesperson explained that depending on the way she’s built she could carry the same or possibly more passengers than Allure of the Seas. Allure currently houses 2,700 staterooms and holds 6,018 passengers at full berth.

Royal Caribbean chief executive Adam Goldstein said the Oasis-class ships have delivered the WOW factor Royal Caribbean is known for.

He said: “We are delighted to get the building process underway and look forward to the next chapter of this amazing class of ships.”

However, some readers on American website, Cruise Critic, think the ship may be a little too big, with one reader, Anita leaving a comment saying it is “ridiculous for cruise ships to continually get bigger and bigger”.

Another reader, Paul said the new ship is “to [sic] big way to [sic] big!”. He added that he always checks the number of passengers on a ship before booking and he won’t board a ship with over 2,500 passengers.

Anna referred to the new ship and its sister ships Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas as “monster ships”, while Kathie said her experience on a large ship was great but a little crowded and congested by the number of passengers on board.

On the other side of the spectrum, Suzanne said she’d like to see the ship sail to the South Pacific, Tahiti, Asia and Australia.

While other readers suggested new activities the cruise line could try installing on the new ship.
