Go Maroons

The Internet may be slow and your mobile isn’t getting any reception, but being on a cruise in the middle of the ocean doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favourite sporting events.

That’s the new theory cruise lines are adopting.

Lines have turned to live streaming games to ship bars and cabins and arranging sport related itineraries to tempt sporting fans onto their ships.

This week, soccer fans aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises and P&O were able to watch as their favourite soccer teams score goals during the 2014 FIFA World Cup games.

Meanwhile, racing fans will be able to combine their love for sport and their love for cruising this year, as lines offer more itineraries to the Melbourne Cup.

For the first time, Carnival Cruise Lines will send Carnival Spirit to Melbourne in time for the annual event.

The round-trip from Sydney will depart on 2 November to arrive in the city on 4 November.

During the cruise guests will be able to get into the racing spirit with sweepstakes, virtual betting, Champagne brunches, high tea and gourmet long lunches.

Once in Melbourne, passengers will receive a ticket to attend the race as well as transport to and from Flemington.

P&O’s Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl will make their annual trips to the race again this year on six-night cruises from Sydney.

Departing 1 November, the ships will take guests to the race before returning to Sydney.

Tickets and transfers to Flemington Racecourse are also included in the fare.

Next year, P&O will host its first Melbourne Cup trifecta, when it sends all three ships – Pacific Pearl, Pacific Jewel and Pacific Dawn – south for the event. Mar

P&O are used to getting into the sporting spirit. They have used their ships to support both the Maroons and the Blues at State of Origin time.

Tickets and transfers to Flemington Racecourse are also included in the fare.
