Loud Shirt Day on October 19 is an annual fundraising event to help First Voice deliver their intensive therapy programs to deaf children around the country. Captain Cook Cruises is jumping onboard and will be holding two charity dinner cruises on the day. Both cruises depart from No. 6 Jetty at Sydney’s Circular Quay and passengers will enjoy a 90-minute cruise around the harbour. Tickets are $59, which includes a choice of mains, a glass of wine, beer or soft drink, and tea and coffee. A dessert menu is available for an additional $15.50 and there’s a full purchase bar. Captain Cook Cruises is donating $5 from every ticket sold to this very worthwhile charity. Tickets and info at www.captaincook.com.au
Another cruise line known for its fundraising campaigns is Holland America Line, which has raised an amazing US$3.2 million to fight breast cancer through its ‘On Deck For a Cure’ initiative. Across their entire 15-ship fleet, passengers are invited to donate $15 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and meet for a 5km walk around the decks of the ship. Holland America Line donates 75 per cent of the proceeds direct to the charity, and with some 500 walks a year the cruise line expects to contribute more than $250,000 annually for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.
P&O Cruises has three charity partners that they help on a regular basis. Each year they host onboard events in Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Beyond that they donate cruises for fundraising and granting wishes, money for gift hampers, and P&O Cruises staff collect public donations on World Wish Day, which is held on April 29 each year.
Other beneficiaries include The Catherine Freeman Foundation, which funds education scholarships for girls from Palm Island in Queensland, and Lifeline Australia. It’s nice to know that a holiday can do you the world of good –and help others in need at the same time.
