MetService expects that the cyclone will head near Northland or East Cape but forecaster Allister Gorman told the Taranaki Daily News that no-one should cancel their holiday plans just yet.
“We don’t want to frighten people away,” Mr Gorman said.
“Gisborne and Northland are big holiday spots, and while we are uncertain we don’t want to put a kibosh on one.
“People need to check the forecast closer to the weekend.”
Cruise ship diversions as a result of Cyclone Evan have included Crystal Symphony that headed to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand instead of calling into Lautoka, Fiji this week.
Carnival Spirit followed suit and amended her maiden Christmas voyage to Fiji to incorporate more of the Vanuatu archipelago instead.
“The number one priority for Carnival Cruise Lines is the safety and well-being of their guests,” a Carnival Cruise Lines spokesperson said in a statement to e-Travel Blackboard.
