A new land and river tour by Active Travel showcases the highlights of Burma.

Active Travel, a specialist in Asian riverboat cruises, has recently released a new 11-day ‘Best of Burma’ tour that takes in historic cities, World Heritage sites, museums and lakeside fishing villages and includes a two-night cruise on a colonial-style river boat.

The tour includes an exploration of Yangon; a flight to Heho to take in the Kakku Pagoda at Taunggyi; a boat excursion across Inle Lake to witness leg-rowing fishermen plying their trade; the historic city of Mandalay; the old royal capital of Ava; and Amarapura.

The concluding two-night cruise aboard RV Paukan floats down the Irrawaddy River to Yandabo, where the villagers specialise in pottery, before moving on to Bagan, a World Heritage-listed site that features more than 2200 temples and pagodas.

RV Paukan was built in 2007 using traditional Burmese timbers and brass, and features Burmese handicrafts and Amarapura-style fabrics on board. The ship was modelled on the company’s original Pandaw 1947: a colonial era twin-screw steamer, built in 1947.
