At a media conference I attended on Celebrity’s new Eclipse this morning, we received some exciting, breaking news in advance of the release of a formal press communication tomorrow. Due to the increasing popularity of the Solstice class ships, Celebrity’s Infinity is the next ship to be “solsticed” next year, going into dry dock for a major enhancement in November 2011.

Additions, we are told, will include the introduction of several specialty restaurants and bars, including a Tuscan Grille, Café al Bacio, Bistro on 5, Martini Ice Bar, Cellar Masters, Blu Restaurant, and Crush Bar. Suites, staterooms and public spaces will also be refreshed with a more simple, elegant and luxurious decor, using rich colours and fabrics, and more leather, kids will benefit from expanded facilities, and for technology lovers there’ll be a new iLounge to explore all things Apple.

A major addition, however, will be more staterooms; 107 new Aqua Class staterooms attached to the spa, boasting enhanced amenities, and a number of staterooms will receive new verandahs.

According to President and CEO, Dan Hanrahan, Infinity’s refurbishment is as a direct result of the popularity of the Solstice class ship features, in particular the additional dining venues. “Things have changed a lot in the past decade since Infinity was built,” he said. “Guests have told us they are want the option of different kinds of dining experiences while on board our ships.”

Celebrity prides itself on offering what Hanrahan describes as an “international product” when it comes to its ships. Around 30 per cent of its guests are international/non-US, and during the busy Europe season that figure increases to nearly 50 per cent.

The Solstice class was introduced to the cruising world just two years ago with the launch of Celebrity Solstice; Eclipse is the third ship in this sleek range, with Silhouette joining her in 2011. Celebrity Infinity was launched in 2001.
