Cruise Passenger reviews the best spa treatments on some of your favourite ships.
When it comes to beauty treatments at sea, medi-spas are the new black. Cruising gives you sufficient downtime to recuperate – and there’s no one to see you do it. Botox, Restylane and Perlane smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, so you can come back with a completely new, youthful look. At Royal Caribbean’s Vitality Spa all procedures are performed by trained physicians. The “Go Smile” system on several lines allows you to whiten your teeth.
Steam rooms and saunas
When Celebrity Cruises named Canyon Spa as its relaxation provider in 2014, it caused a ripple in the $14 billion relaxation industry. The Canyon Ranch SpaClub is renowned and has been in the business for 35 years. It had hitherto been on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. On Celebrity’s Solstice-class ships AquaSpa guests can soak up the benefits of penetrating steam infused with plant essences in an aromatic steam room, part of the Persian Garden thermal suite. Those who prefer the traditional Finnish sauna can indulge in a classic hot and dry sauna room made of Nordic cedar and heated by a hidden stove. Acupuncture
Acupuncture is thriving on cruise ships and can help with everything from tension to pain. Azamara Club Cruises, for instance, offers acupuncture at sea clinics. Operated by experienced licensed practitioners, the acupuncture treatments can help those who want to give up smoking as well as reduce stress and boost circulation. For those suffering from motion sickness, the treatments can also help to prevent nausea.
Kneipp walk pool
This is a holistic water therapy treatment designed to enhance circulation. A shallow, circular pool is divided into regions of very warm and chilled water. When spa guests walk slowly around the pool, the combination of changing pressures, temperatures and motion improves capillary circulation, helps to remove toxins, increases hormonal balance and reduces stress. The treatment is especially beneficial for guests who have made long flights. Seabourn Quest, Sojourn and Odyssey offer this facility.
Talking of Seabourn, the line has incorporated four penthouse spa suites aboard the Odyssey, just in time for the ship’s arrival for another summer of cruising in Australia. The luxury spa suites cater for guests wanting a spa vacation. The 50sqm suites with an expansive private veranda have a spiral staircase leading to the spa lobby. Guests have unlimited access to the spa’s relaxation areas, amenities and services of the spa concierge. Spa suites are stocked with a variety of healthy snacks and Molton Brown bath products and designer soaps from Hermès, L’Occitane, Baudelaire and Salvatore Ferragamo.
Those determined to keep their weight down during a cruise can opt for spa cuisine. Carnival Legend’s formal dining Truffles restaurant has dishes that are lower in fat, kilojoules, sodium and cholesterol. Meats are grilled or roasted, salads are prepared with low-fat or fat-free dressings and desserts are made with sugar substitutes. And you would hardly know the difference as they still taste delicious. On Azamara ships you can have an hour-long session with a nutrition consultant who will suggest a personalised diet plan.
Face and body treatments
Rejuvenate face and body and increase circulation and cellular metabolism with the Acu-Lift treatment offered by Azamara Club Cruises. A collagen booster serum or a 24-carat gold facial massage will also help. On Regent Seven Seas Cruises, facials by Canyon Ranch use oxygen-boosting Swiss extracts while its gemstone anti-ageing treatment has a pearl enzyme exfoliating cream and a Kashmir perfecting mask.
Fit and fabulous
Crystal Cruises keeps guests fit with the new Tour De Cycle indoor cycling range that mirrors stages of the Tour de France. The uber-luxury line also offers a Walk-On-Water weighted vest program and has a full time fitness director and a sports director to ensure there’s no slacking.
