P&O Cruises’ newest vessel is christened “in an explosion of pink bubbles.”
Diamonds were the theme of the day at Adonia’s Southampton christening and the ceremony didn’t disappoint. Fireworks, glistening pink bubbles, silver confetti and fresh white paint were highlighted against the summer sun.
The theme was chosen in honour of the new ship’s godmother, British performing superstar Dame Shirley Bassey, and her hit song “Diamonds are Forever”.
“I name this ship Adonia. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” Dame Shirley said, before pressing a diamond-shaped button to send a magnum of Hush Heath Balfour rose sparkling wine smashing against Adonia’s white hull (freshly painted after a three-week transformation in the Bahamas).
About 500 guests attended the event, held on the 710-passenger ship’s top deck.
Adonia, which is an adults-only vessel, is currently sailing her maiden voyage – a 16-night Western Mediterranean cruise.
