Australia is one of the fastest growing cruise markets across all regions, except Asia.

Last year, Australian European cruisers reached 57,700. America welcomed 57,400 Australians. Passengers to the South Pacific have almost doubled since 2008. And New Zealand has received 350 percent more Aussie cruisers over the past five years.

On the other hand, Asia experienced a 13 percent drop in Australians cruising to the region compared to 2011.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia Brett Jardine cited the decrease to a sharp decline in available capacity since 2009.

Speaking at the Cruise Shipping Asia Pacific Conference in Singapore last week, he said that while capacity did increase in 2012, the growing Asia market is filling the majority of it.

He said: “Travel time is short by comparison to Europe and North America and yet we are not seeing the numbers we would like.”

Mr Jardine also noted a surge in short breaks taken by Australians in 2012. Fifty-one percent of Australians opted for an 8-14 day cruise.
