Governments warn travellers of heightened risk of anti-Western terrorism.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has issued a travel warning to all Western tourists, advising of a heightened risk violence aimed towards Westerners in retaliation for the death of Osama bin Laden.
The announcement that there is an “enhanced potential for violence given the recent counter-terrorism activity in Pakistan” follows a US Worldwide Travel Alert, which was issued after the news of bin Laden’s death reached media outlets.
In addition to the alert, the US Department of State says American citizens in areas affected by the activity should avoid mass demonstrations and limit non-essential travel from homes and hotels.
So far, no cruise itineraries have been affected by the travel warnings but, like all other Western tourists overseas, passengers should take greater precautions with monitoring their surroundings.
