A new luxury river ship, the AmaMagna will be launched in 2019 to cruise the European waterways.

APT and partner Amawaterways unveiled plans for the AmaMagna which will have twice the width of traditional European river ships.

The ship will have a quieter and more fuel-efficient engine, an alfresco glass-enclosed restaurant and a sports platform with zodiac boats and canoes.

The new ship will have 97 staterooms with the majority of rooms over 27sq m each – the biggest in river cruising, APT said.

The ship will also have a large heated sundeck swimming pool, a sky bar, a spacious spa and fitness room.

APT managing director Chris Hall said: “The AmaMagna will be in a class of its own in terms of amenity and performance and we believe that now is the time to launch this game-changing style of ship.’’

The announcement comes as APT reported a 60 per cent growth in sales in river cruises in the first quarter of this year compared to last year.

Much of the growth has been driven by APT’s popular river cruises in the Mekong and Myanmar.

“Our European cruises continue to grow at a steady rate while Asia is delivering stellar results,’’ Angela Waite, head of sales and commercial said.
